The swallow was chosen as the national bird of Estonia in 1962 at a meeting of the ornithology section of the Estonian Society of Naturalists in Tartu. The author of nature books, Kustas Põldmaa, nominated the swallow as a candidate for the national bird. Swallows used to be an example of diligence. Old people also noticed that the swallow brings the heat of the day. The swallow is a symbol of freedom and optimism.
